Class C Fire: What It Is and How to Put It Out Safely

A Class C fire is an electrical fire — one that involves energized electrical equipment like wiring, panels, motors, appliances, or electronics. The "energized" part is what makes it its own class. As long as the power is on, the electricity itself is a hazard, and that changes everything about how you fight the fire.

What Causes Class C Fires

  • Loose or corroded connections that heat up under load.
  • Overloaded circuits pushing more current than the wiring is rated for.

  • Arc faults, where current jumps a gap and creates intense localized heat.

How to Put Out a Class C Fire Safely

Here's the single most important rule: never use water on an energized electrical fire. Water conducts electricity, so spraying it on a live fire can send current back to you and cause electrocution. It's one of the most dangerous mistakes people make.

The safe steps are:

  1. Cut the power if you safely can. Switching off the breaker or unplugging the equipment removes the electrical hazard. Once de-energized, the fire may become a Class A or B fire you can fight more conventionally — but only approach if it's safe.
  2. Use a Class C–rated extinguisher. If you can't cut the power, or the fire is already going, use an extinguisher rated for Class C fires.
  3. Get out and call for help if the fire is spreading or you're unsure. No fire is worth your life.

For extinguishers, the two common choices for Class C fires are:

  • CO₂ (carbon dioxide) extinguishers — they displace oxygen and leave no residue, which makes them popular around electronics and server rooms.
  • Clean agent extinguishers — these use a non-conductive, residue-free agent that suppresses the fire without damaging sensitive electrical equipment. A clean agent is especially valued where you want to avoid the corrosive mess that dry chemical powder leaves behind.

Dry chemical (ABC) extinguishers are also rated for Class C and are common as general-purpose units, but the powder is corrosive and can ruin electronics — something to weigh if you're protecting valuable equipment.
