Residential building fires
Estimated U.S. residential building fires caused by electrical malfunction in 2023.
U.S. Fire Administration · 2023 data ↗APPLICATION / FIREXNULL
Loose or overheated wire connections and terminations can create localized electrical fire risks. FXN Tape offers passive supplemental fire suppression for compatible connection points.
FireXNull products are designed as supplemental protection, not as substitutes for code-required fire protection systems. Review technical documentation and confirm fit for the application.
IN SHORT
FXN Tape adds passive, heat-activated fire suppression directly at compatible electrical connection points, including wire junctions, terminals, terminal blocks and bus connectors inside enclosed or semi-enclosed equipment. The adhesive-backed tape is cut to length and wrapped around the connection, and releases FK-5-1-12 clean agent at 248°F ± 9°F (120°C ± 5°C). It needs no power or wiring. It does not repair faulty connections and does not replace electrical maintenance, insulation or circuit protection.
01 / THE CONTEXT
Electrical malfunction remains a steady cause of building fires in both homes and commercial and industrial buildings.

Combined residential ($1.50 billion) and nonresidential ($354.4 million) direct dollar loss from electrical malfunction fires in 2023.

02 / LOCALIZED ELECTRICAL RISKS
A loose, corroded or poorly terminated connection adds resistance, and resistance under load produces heat. That heat builds at the connection itself, which is where FXN Tape places the agent.
03 / AN ADDED LAYER OF PROTECTION
Because FXN Tape sits on the connection itself, the agent is released at the protected connection point rather than distributed across the enclosure.

| Layer | Scope | How it works | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct termination | Each connection | Installation to the device manufacturer's instructions, including specified torque | Reduces loose-connection risk at the source |
| Inspection and thermal imaging | Equipment and connections | Periodic checks find hot spots and degraded connections | Catches problems before failure |
| Circuit protection | Circuits | Breakers, fuses and protective devices respond to overcurrent and faults | Interrupts many electrical faults |
| FXN Tape | One compatible connection point | Heat at the tape reaches its activation temperature | Supplemental, localized layer at the connection |
FXN Tape does not send an alarm signal and does not replace any of these layers.

05 / THE CLEAN AGENT
FXN Tape uses microencapsulated FK-5-1-12, an electrically non-conductive clean agent that evaporates without leaving a residue. When heat at the wrapped connection reaches the activation temperature, the capsules release the agent directly at the connection. No wiring, power supply or detection hardware is required.
After any fire event, equipment should be inspected by qualified personnel and the underlying electrical problem corrected before returning to service. How the technology works →

07 / COMMON QUESTIONS
No. FXN Tape provides supplemental suppression only. Faulty wiring and loose connections must be corrected by qualified personnel.
No. It is not a substitute for correctly rated electrical insulation. Standard electrical insulation tape may be applied over FXN Tape where additional dielectric protection is required.
No. FXN Tape is intended for connection points inside enclosed or semi-enclosed equipment.
Yes. Trim it to length with standard scissors or a utility knife to match the wire diameter and connection geometry.
No. Activation is passive and triggered by heat at the product. Because it is not connected to a fire alarm system, it does not send an alarm signal or notification.
No. FK-5-1-12 is an electrically non-conductive clean agent. For the electrical properties of each finished product, installation clearances and placement, refer to that product's Technical Data Sheet and the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
Inspect periodically for secure mounting, damage or obstruction. The recommended replacement is 5 years after installation, or immediately after any activation. These intervals are maintenance guidance, not a performance guarantee.
No. FireXNull products are not UL Listed or FM Approved as fire suppression products. The UL Recognized Component Material reference applies only to the FXN Tape component material (FXN-15L acrylate sheet, HB flammability classification), not to fire suppression performance.
Match the width to the connection geometry so the tape fully covers the connection with overlapping turns. Share the connection type and size and our team will recommend a model.
FXN Tape is supplemental protection. It is not a replacement for correctly rated electrical insulation, electrical maintenance, circuit protection or required fire protection.
